Day 2: The Eiffel Tower

Day two in Paris began with a relatively late meeting time and a delicious breakfast at a parisian café. We then made our way to the Eiffel Tower. The view as we approached the tower was spectacular, and we stopped to take lots of pictures. The locals had set up some little stalls along the road between the metro station and the Eiffel Tower, and they were selling all types of things- cheese, trinkets, purses, etc. There were also two different carousels between us and the tower. We made it by the first one without a ride, but there was no way we were making it by both of them. The carousel that we rode was cool, though, because it was two stories tall. I've never seen one like that before. After riding the merry-go-round, we continued our walk to the base of the tower. The line to go up into the tower itself was very long, but we waited anyway. We figured that we should go all the way to the top since we weren't sure if we'd ever be back in Paris again. So, after lots and lots of waiting, we got into the elevator that went to the second platform. There, we stood in line for a smaller elevator that took us to the top. The view from the top was awesome. We could see all of Paris laid out before us. I had no idea that the city was so large! The journey to the top of the tower pretty much took up our whole day. After we got back down, we walked around a little bit and then went back to the hotel. I would say that of all of the things that we did in Paris, this was the kids' favorite- and the one that they are most likely to remember.

Day 1: Welcome to Paris

We had the opportunity to travel to Paris, France with Brian's family over the Christmas Holidays. Neither Brian nor I had ever been to Europe, so this trip was a really big deal for us. We had a fantastic time, and I will be discussing our trip in detail in the next couple of posts.

Day one was actually a day and a half long. We left the airport in Atlanta on Christmas Eve and flew overnight to Paris. I have always assumed that jet lag sucks, but I now know this first hand. We didn't get any sleep on the plane thanks to the baby sitting in the row behind us who screamed for hours on end. By the time that we had landed, gone through security, and got a shuttle to our hotel, it was well after noon on Christmas Day. Naturally, we were hungry- but we were also very tired. Once we entered the hotel room, we immediately crashed on the bed. So, most of day one in Paris was spent asleep. Everyone seemed to feel better around 7pm, so we met in the lobby to find something to eat. After walking around the neighboorhood a bit, we settled for a little grill owned by a turkish guy. The food was good, but at this point I could have eaten a cardboard box. After supper, we went directly back to the hotel room and fell right back to sleep. We may not have gotten a whole lot accomplished, but we did learn our way around the neighboorhood and we spotted the metro entrance.

Christmas (Eve) Morning

That Santa Claus is one accommodating fellow. He was kind enough to visit our home on the morning of Christmas Eve this year since he knew that we would be traveling on Christmas Day. The kids had written him a note asking him to do this, but they weren't sure whether or not he would honor their request until they woke up on Saturday morning. They must have been really good this year because they received lots of wonderful gifts. Both kids got a mini pillow-pet, warm clothes, books, and movies. Owen also received a truck set while Olivia got a "xia xia" set (don't ask- I myself am still not sure about the purpose of this toy). After checking out their gifts from Santa, we opened our family presents. Owen received another set of trucks from Brian and I while Olivia got a Lalaloopsy doll. Both also got a LeapPad. Thank goodness that Brian is in the "loop" when it comes to cool toys because I had no idea what half of the stuff we received on Christmas (eve) morning was. The kids knew, though, and they really liked it. Posted are a couple of pictures from our day-early celebration.

Christmas at Gigi and Papa's

Christmas at Gigi and Papa's house was, as always, lots of fun. We had a delicious meal, socialized, and opened gifts. We all got such nice things. One of the funniest gifts was the Darth Vador backpack that Uncle Sam go for Owen. Owen has never seen Star Wars, but he loved the backpack. Kelly got a pitchfork which prompted the "American Gothic"-style photo seen below. At the end of the evening, Gigi and Papa brought out the kids' final gift- bouncy balls. The kids loved the balls and had so much fun bouncing around on them. It was a great, fun night.

The Jacksonville Bank Half Marathon

Last Sunday I participated in the Jacksonville Bank Half Marathon. This almost didn't happen because Brian had a change in his work schedule at the last minute. Fortunately, I have the best mom in the world and she woke up a 3 a.m. to come to my house and watch the kids so that I could run. This was the last race in the Tri-2B-Tuff half marathon series (three half marathons in three months). I really enjoyed this race. The marathoners (aka- the crazy people) ran a portion of the same course as the halfers, so I was able to stay with a pacing group for the first couple of miles. This really helped me out. My time was 1:56:37, which put me under the two hour mark (finally). I was thrilled with my time. This was a great way to round out the year.

Since this is my last race of the year, I would like to take a moment to reflect on what a great running year this has been. I ran eleven 5Ks, two 10Ks, one 15K, four half marathons, and one duathlon. I set a PR in each category except the 10K. I am currently (and excitedly) working on my running schedule for next year. One of my goals is to run more half marathons. I find that this is my favorite distance for racing, and I want to do more of those. I am also hoping to purchase a quality bike and work toward more duathlons. This may or may not happen- we'll see how the money goes. I think that I also want to try a mud/obstacle run next year, so I'm on the lookout for one of those. I've got a rough draft of a schedule sketched out already, so if any of you run or are looking to start running next year- let me know. We'll carpool =)

Olivia's Christmas Dance Performance

Olivia's dance class had a short presentation for the parents this week. The girls were given cute little reindeer ears to wear with their leotards. Olivia's class presented two routines- a ballet and a tap. Olivia did well in both. Here is a link to a video of the ballet routine, which was the better of the two. (The link will open youtube). The video is about a minute and a half long. As you can see, the girls do a great job until the end- then someone starts fooling around and they all catch a case of the giggles. Enjoy!

Children's Christmas Play

The kids had a small part in the children's Christmas program at church this year. Owen was a sheep, and Olivia was a shepard girl. The pre-k group sang two songs- including "Baby Jesus" (see video below). Those pre-k kids know that they have lots of energy. I get tired just watching them. After the play was over, we enjoyed finger food with our church family. Santa made a guest appearance, and the kids got to sit on his lap. Olivia asked for a pillow pet for the second year in a row. She did get one last year, but she wants a pillow pet "family". We couldn't get Owen to talk to Santa, but he did sit on his lap. I was a little disappointed that Owen wouldn't tell Santa what he wanted because he is so hard to buy for. He hardly ever asks for anything- which is pretty much the opposite of what Olivia does.
