It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

The weeks leading up to Christmas are always packed full of holiday events and activities.  This year things kicked off in early December with the municipal Christmas parade.  This is always a much-anticipated event and it was made even more special because Gigi and Papa had all of their grandkids in attendance.  This was the first time that James and John Daniel had been old enough to retrieve the candy thrown during the parade, and James was all about it.  He stuffed my bag so full of candy that it would last him a month.  Unfortunately for him, it was mostly hard candy.

The kids went to see the lights at the Okefenokee Swamp Park with the youth group.  They had a great time and said that the lights were beautiful.  Of course, no trip to the swamp would be complete without touching various reptiles.

I attended a Christmas party hosted by some of my friends from high school.  We had a really good time.  It was nice to catch up with everyone.

Our family helped decorate the church for Christmas and had the opportunity to light the candle during the second Sunday of Advent.

We also attended the church's children's performance.  I no longer have kids young enough to participate in this program, so I helped organize Santa's appearance at the end of the program.  Even though she's too big to be in the program, Olivia felt that she was still young enough to sit in Santa's lap.

After the children's performance, we went caroling.  This was the most amazing experience, and I hope to do it every year in the future.  We visited the houses of some of church members who are no longer able to get out as much as they once were.  We also visited a nursing home.  You could just feel the joy that we were bringing to the people that we visited.  It was just fantastic.

And finally, we put up our tree.  It took forever to get it up this year, but we did.  The kids added their new ornaments from Boston and Chicago, and they now have so many ornaments on the tree that I don't even bother getting mine and Brian's out of the attic.

Fall Robotics

As you all know being on the robotics team is the kids' primary extracurricular activity.  They love it.  We were so excited when they both made the team.  The way that it works is that there are actually four robots that the school competes with. Once the kids make the overall robotics team, they are placed on a smaller "team" which must build, program, and compete with one of the four robots.  I like this first picture because it has the entire school team sitting on rows with the members of their smaller teams.  Owen is on a team with four other boys who all have lots of robot experience (they've all been to Worlds).  This is a great opportunity for Owen to learn about robotics.  Of course, Owen competed in elementary school, but there is a huge difference between that and middle school.  In elementary, the kids get a lot of help from the advisors.  In middle school, the kids do every single thing themselves.  So, Owen has a lot to learn and this is a great team to be on to do that.  Oliva is on the girl-powered team again this year.  She is the "captain" officially, but the girls work so well together it's like they're all co-captains.

There were three competitions in the fall, and there will be more after the new year.  Here is how things have gone so far:

Competition #1:  Both kids' robots made it to the finals.  Olivia's robot finished fourteenth in qualifying and fifth overall in the alliance competition, and Owen's finished third in qualifying and second in the finals.  The second-place finish at this tournament qualified Owen's team for state.

Competition #2:  The Robogators absolutely dominated this competition winning five of the six awards presented.  Olivia's team finished seventh in qualifying and second in finals.  Owen's team finished second in qualifying and won the tournament.  Owen's team also won the skills challenge and the excellence award at this tournament.  The win here qualified Owen's team to attend the U.S. open in Iowa, which they will attend in April of next year.  One of the other teams (team A) also finishes first or second consistently and they were also big winners at this tournament.  They will be going to Iowa as well.

Competition #3:  This tournament was special because the team from the kids' old elementary school were also competing.  It was good for them to be back around their old coaches and Owen's teammates from last year.  Olivia's team finished seventh in qualifying and third overall.  Owen's team finished first in qualifying and won the tournament.
I am proud of all four of the teams.  All four teams have consistently performed at the top at each competition.  Owen's team is doing really well and has won or finished second at each tournament.  Olivia's team has come so far from where they were last year.  I can't remember if they ever made it to the finals at any tournament last year.  They may have had once, but that would be it.  This year, they have made it to the finals at every tournament and have even come close to winning.  They haven't qualified for state yet, but they have a good chance of doing so if they keep working at it.

The only kind of negative thing about robotics is that there are not many other teams in our area, so we have to go to north Georgia for all of the competitions.  This takes a lot of time and is expensive because it's so far that we often have to spend the night.  I have noticed on my drives up that if the competition is in Covington, the route there passes by Juliette, Ga- home of the Whistle Stop Cafe (from Fried Green Tomatoes).  We had extra time after our first competition this year, so the kids and I stopped to eat here.  It was super busy, but we stuck out the hour wait and enjoyed a delicious meal.  I like it when we can couple our robotics trips with other things that I've always wanted to do.  That makes the long drive more bearable.

Christmas Concert

With Christmas comes the yearly band concert.  Both kids are now in the band, so both participated this year.  Owen is in the beginning band, and his group played a few lines from their books and also two "big kid" songs.  Olivia is in the regular band, and her group performed four selections.  All groups did very well.
In other band news, Olivia tried out for the district honor band.  She went back and forth about whether she should give it a shot or not because she did not think that she knew her scales well enough to make it.  In the end, she decided to just go for it, and she's glad that she did.  She ended up making the district concert band.  She was so excited.

Tech Fair

Owen recently presented an animation project at the district technology fair.  For his project, he animated a sequence to go with the classic children's song The Itsy Bitsy Spider.  He did a really good job and got a second-place medal.  This qualifies him to move on to the regional competition in January.  Olivia is also competing at the regional competition in the category of device modification.  She and her partner will be presenting the ROV that they worked on over the summer (which has been modified since that time).

Welcome, Quill

There was a time when Owen was Gigi and Papa's only male grandchild, but the numbers are slowly evening out.   We welcomed the latest addition to the "boy team" in early December.  And so, I would like to introduce my sweet and super-cute nephew, Quill Hugh.  He is so loved already.

Holly Ball

Owen is participating in Jr. Cotillion again this year.  In early December, he attended the Holly Ball- one of two big dances that the organization holds each year.  He was not able to attend this event last year because it coincided with a robotics tournament.  Owen had a great time.  He and Claire were paired together for the Cha Cha dance-off, and they won.  They must get those skills from their mamas.

Wicked

Over Thanksgiving break, the kids and I went with Hannah, the girls, and Granny Mel to Jacksonville to see Wicked.  It was so well done.  The costumes, props, and singing were top notch.  We enjoyed our trip tremendously and would definitely consider attending another of the broadway tour shows in the future. (It may the near future because the kids are begging me to go see Hamilton again).
